One of the Oldest Traded Spices in Human History
Cinnamon's history stretches back further than almost any other spice still in common use. Ancient Egyptian texts reference cinnamon as early as 2000 BCE, used in embalming and religious offerings, and it appears in Chinese texts dating back nearly as far. For most of ancient history, cinnamon's true geographic origin — the island of Sri Lanka and parts of South Asia — was deliberately obscured by traders, who invented elaborate stories about how it was harvested to protect their trade monopoly and justify its extraordinary price.
Cinnamon was, for centuries, a luxury good precisely because its supply chain was a closely guarded secret. It wasn't until Portuguese traders reached Sri Lanka directly in the early 1500s that Europeans understood where cinnamon actually came from.
A Spice Cabinet Staple, Not a Research Subject
For most of its multi-thousand-year history, cinnamon's story is one of flavor, trade, and cultural significance — not metabolic science. It flavored food and drink across dozens of cultures, was used in traditional medicine systems including Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine for digestive complaints, and eventually became a routine, inexpensive baking spice once colonial trade broke the original monopoly. None of this involved anything resembling modern clinical research.
That changed dramatically, and quite recently, relative to cinnamon's overall history.
The Modern Research Turn
Cinnamon's connection to blood sugar is a research area that has grown substantially only in the last two decades, accelerating further in recent years as more rigorous meta-analyses have been published. Rather than a single landmark discovery, cinnamon's research profile has built up through dozens of smaller human trials examining its effect on fasting glucose and insulin sensitivity — with genuinely mixed individual results, given differences in cinnamon species, dose, and trial design.
The clearest recent evidence comes from pooled analysis rather than any single study: a November 2025 umbrella review spanning 21 meta-analyses and 139 individual comparisons found cinnamon supplementation significantly associated with improved fasting glucose — among the more substantial evidence bases behind any botanical in this category. It's worth noting this research has been conducted on cinnamon bark extract or powder specifically, at studied doses, not on GlucoTide® or any particular finished formula.
Where That Leaves Cinnamon Today
